Learning Objective:

  • Identify primary leadership style.
  • Identify the team’s leadership strengths.

Key Content:

  • Leadership Styles: Transformational, Task-Oriented, Strengths-Based, Collaborative, Quantum.
  • APS Leadership Development Framework (theories, models, tools).
  • Four Domains of Leadership Strength tool.

Activities:

  • Read/review reference articles and book (optional).
  • Use the Four Domains of Leadership Strength tool to assess self and team.
  • Coaching sessions (2–4 max):
    • Discuss preferred leadership styles.
    • Apply styles to current challenges.
    • Explore steps to practice new styles.
    • Reflect on strengths, worries, and next steps.

Segment 2: Communication in Leadership

Learning Objective:

  • Gain knowledge regarding communication in leadership.
  • Learn expectations for clarity, openness, respect, and accountability.
  • Apply the Core Practice Model Leadership Practice Profile across programs.

Key Content:

  • Effective communication as a fundamental leadership skill.
  • Core Practice Model (CPM) Leadership Practice Profile:
    • Clear: age-appropriate language, confirm literacy needs.
    • Open & Honest: transparent about issues, confidentiality, agency roles.
    • Respectful: address individuals by preferred names/titles, show deference to Tribal leadership.
    • Accountable: model trust, responsiveness, timeliness, compliance with laws.

Activities:

  • Review reference materials (videos, articles, microlearning modules).
  • Print and complete CPM Leadership Practice Profile self-assessment.
  • Coaching sessions (1–2 max):
    • Discuss accomplished vs. uncomfortable skills.
    • Apply communication skills to challenging situations.
    • Reflect on strengths, worries, and next steps.

Segment 3: Leading Change (Adaptive Leadership)

Learning Objective:

  • Examine change leadership methods.
  • Study Adaptive Leadership evaluation skills and elements.

Key Content:

  • Adaptive Leadership: mobilizing people to tackle challenges and thrive.
  • Distinguishing technical vs. adaptive challenges.
  • Courageous conversations: confronting assumptions, values, and biases.
  • Encouraging experimentation, creativity, and risk-taking.
  • Tolerating mistakes as part of change.
  • Managing loss and resistance to change.
  • Adaptive Leadership process: observe, interpret, design interventions.
  • “Balcony vs. dance floor” perspective.
  • Weaknesses: requires broad skill set, challenges status quo, discomfort with uncertainty.

Activities:

  • Review content and complete Adaptive Leadership Toolkit self-assessment.
  • Coaching sessions (1–2 max):
    • Discuss evaluation tools, balcony/dance floor analogy.
    • Reflect on self-assessment results.
    • Share change leadership successes.

Segment 4: Coaching in Leadership

  • Review differences between coaching and managing.
  • Research various coaching methods in leadership.

  • Exploring personal coaching preferences and effectiveness.
